D-Pad doesn't work if PS3 Controller is used

I am trying to use a Playstation 3 controller (connected via usb cable). Directions only work if the left stick is used, but most games can't be played like this.

In the key configuration menu, where are no buttons for the dpad listed, too.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Connect PS3 controller via usb
2. Go to settings -> external devices
3. The controller should be listed there (check screenshot)

Expected behavior
There should be 4 other options for the dpad listed.
