Custom bar-like progress component

I was wondering if anyone has or knew how to create a custom progress component that rendered a bar instead of a "%" value.

I wrote up this little guy

  local progress_chars = { "▁", "▂", "▃", "▄", "▅", "▆", "▇", "█" }
  local current_line = vim.api.fn.line(".")
  local total_lines = vim.api.fn.line("$")

  local output = string.format(
    "%s %d%%",
    progress_chars[math.ceil((current_line / total_lines) * #progress_chars)],
    math.floor((current_line / total_lines) * 100)
  )

  return output
end

but am not seeing anything rendered. I'm not a Lua guy so not sure how something like this would be done. I could've sworn I saw something like this in NvChad or one of those other frameworks but can't find it now.
