wrong names in pihole

Name resolution only works correctly for a short time. After about 45-60 minutes, other names appear, which is the device's original name. Initially, the name from the Fritzbox (which is what I named the device) appears, and after 45-60 minutes, the name the device used when it first registered with the Fritzbox appears. This error is very strange.

I have the same issue on my side. Might be related using a router as DHCP server and thus having DHCP disabled in Pi-hole.

In my case I have configured Conditional Forwarding in the Pi-hole DNS settings so that Pi-hole forwards requests of my devices in my local network to the router for local device name resolution.

Conditional forwarding configuration:

true,192.168.178.0/24,192.168.178.1,fritz.box

The issue only occurs for devices running on Android. In Pi-hole they show up with 'surrogate' names having the prefix 'Android_', followed by a random string of letters, e.g. 'Android_LDTZZFPT.fritz.box'

Device names of iOS devices are not impacted and show correctly in Pi-hole.

My router: AVM FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro

I've found a workaround for the problem. Whether it's truly the solution, I doubt. It's really just a way of masking the issue. I noticed that the names only change after a certain amount of time (1-2 hours). So I went to Settings -> All Settings -> Resolver -> resolver.refreshNames and set it to "unknown". This makes the names stay the same. Like I said, for me it's just a way of masking the problem, not the real solution.

I can confirm what @stanevers said, I've a similar setup. IMO it's not a Pi-hole issue.

You can verify that, by querying the fritzbox: dig -x <device IP> @192.168.178.1

It shows the Android_XXX name for the device. I played a bit around and sometimes enabling/disabling WIFI or rebooting the android device "fixes" the issue for some time.

Conclusion: For whatever reason, my Android device doesn't always send it's device name to my fritzbox, but instead Android_XXX.
