X in left margin / gutter

On a file I opened recently, there was an "x" to the left of each message. I've never noticed this before, and I couldn't find anything in the docs explaining what this mean. Why is this pink x shown?

It looks like the terminal state got corrupted and the alternate character set is not being enabled. Try running reset in the terminal to reset its state and then rerun lnav.
