generic function and variable should be defined in maxsum.py and reused in amaxsum.py
makes testing and reuse easier
Still a work in progress
to avoid confusion with base VariableComputation class

A synchronous implementation of MaxSum, along with a full clean-up of our original asynchronous MaxSum implementation.
Both implementation should use the same utility functions as much as possible.
